Idaho’s June cheese production questioned

Some question regarding the June cheese production numbers from USDA last Friday.  Eric Meyer with Highground Dairy notes the 21.2 percent drop in Idaho cheese production compared to a year ago.  American type cheese production was down 37.6 percent.  Meyer says they question the plunge and have asked the ag department for a clarification.  He says he would not be surprised if USDA makes a sharp adjustment upward next month.

USDA reported that total cheese production in the U.S. was up just a half-percent compared to June of 2013.  By Highground’s calculation, if Idaho’s June cheese production were actually even with a year ago, total U.S. cheese production would be up 2.5 percent compared to last June and in-line with the 2.5 percent increases we saw in April and May.

Idaho had 57.7 million pounds of total cheese production in June compared to 73.4 million in May and 69.8 million in April and 73.2 million in June of 2013.
