Key to productivity is soil health
As farmers strive to feed a growing world population, one of the factors in their ability to do so is soil health.
Indiana farmer and past National Association of Conservation Districts president Gene Schmidt says farmers have a good grasp of the best production practices.
And, he says, the soil health is the backbone to productivity. “It all starts with the soil,” he says. “Whatever we can do to improve that structure, improve that atmosphere and that habitat of that growing crop. To make sure it’s sustainable and make sure we can truly maximize the potential of the soil to provide the food, fuel, and fiber that this country is going to need in the future.”
Schmidt says soil heath is also vitally important to protecting water quality.
