Iowa crop development ahead of average

Last week may have been cooler and drier than normal around Iowa, but it was a good week for crops.

59% of corn is silking, 11 days ahead of 2013 and 2% faster than the five year average, with 77% of the crop rated good to excellent. 67% of soybeans are blooming, more than double this time last year and 19% are at the pod setting stage, well ahead of average, with 74% of beans called good to excellent.

54% of the second cut of alfalfa is complete and 74% of pastures are in good to excellent condition.
