Ohio corn crop looks good

While overall the Ohio corn crop looks good and the potential is there for a very good crop, Peter Thomison, Extension corn specialist at Ohio State University says there are some issues in areas that bare watching, including foliar diseases.

“Another concern is the highly variable nature of the crops development,” Thomison said. “We have a lot of corn tasseling, but we have corn that was planted after June 1 and keeping our fingers crossed we don’t have an early frost, that would be a bad thing if we had a frost the latter half of September.”

The Extension corn specialist adds the crop is not as far behind as some might think, due to night time temperatures not being as low.

“So our GDD accumulation wasn’t reduced as much as you might think because nighttime temperatures were higher even though daytime temperatures were maybe not as high as we wanted,” said Thomison. “The net was we were still getting the heat unit accumulation.”
