USDA projects less winter wheat, more spring wheat

U.S. farmers are set to produce less winter wheat in 2014 than in 2013, while increasing spring wheat production.

As of July 1, USDA sees winter wheat production at 1.367 billion bushels, compared to 1.534 billion in 2013. Average yield is estimated at 42.2 bushels per acre, compared to 42.4 on June 1 and the year ago average of 47.4 bushels per acre. Harvested area is projected at 32.419 million acres, slightly more than the 32.402 million last year. By type, for 2014, hard red winter is pegged at 702.963 million bushels, soft red winter is seen at 458.077 million, and white winter is estimated at 185.25 million bushels.

Spring wheat production is expected to be 564.626 million bushels, compared to 533.529 million a year ago. The average yield is projected at 45.5 bushels per acre, compared to the 2013 average of 47.1. Harvested area is estimated at 12.403 million acres, compared to 11.334 million last year. Out of the total, the vast majority, 520.455 million bushels, is hard red spring.

Durum is seen at 59.645 million bushels, compared to 61.913 million last year. The average yield is expected to be 42.1 bushels per acre, compared to the year ago average of 43.6. Harvested area is projected at 1.418 million acres, compared to 1.421 million in 2013.

Total U.S. wheat production for 2014 is estimated at 1.992 billion bushels, compared to 2.130 billion a year ago.

Illinois: 46.23 million bushels, compared to 55.61 million in 2013; average yield of 67 bushels per acre, compared to 66 a month ago and 67 a year ago; harvested area of 690,000 acres, compared to 830,000 last year

Indiana: 24.48 million bushels, compared to 32.12 million in 2013; average yield of 68 bushels per acre, compared to 68 a month ago and 73 a year ago; harvested area of 360,000 acres, compared to 440,000 last year

Missouri: 46.75 million bushels, compared to 56 million in 2013; average yield of 55 bushels per acre, compared to 55 a month ago and 56 a year ago; harvested area of 850,000 acres, compared to 1 million last year

Nebraska: 56 million bushels, compared to 39.55 million in 2013; average yield of 40 bushels per acre, compared to 40 a month ago and 35 a year ago; harvested area of 1.4 million acres, compared to 1.13 million last year

Ohio: 38.76 million bushels, compared to 46.55 million in 2013; average yield of 68 bushels per acre, compared to 67 a month ago and 70 a year ago; harvested area of 570,000 acres, compared to 665,000 last year
