Wisconsin fields wet but looking good

Wisconsin farmers were able to get some hay made in between showers and storms last week. The weekly Crop Progress Report from the National Ag Statistics Service Wisconsin Field Office has 95 percent of the first crop and 24 percent of the second crop hay made in the state as of Sunday. While both numbers are behind the five-year averages, they do represent a 6-point improvement on the first crop and 15 percent improvement on second crop compared to a week ago.

The Badger State corn crop is rated 77 percent good to excellent condition although any low spots are yellow and stressed. Weeds are a problem if farmers were unable to spray. There was no problem finding corn that was knee-high by the Fourth of July with Washington and Grant Counties reporting some at 5-feet.

Soybeans are also 77 percent good to excellent shape with 5 percent blooming. 74 percent of the oats are headed with 85 percent in good to excellent condition. Winter wheat is 72 percent good to excellent shape with 97 percent headed and 55 percent turning color.

Topsoil moisture actually backed-off a bit with 69 percent adequate and 30 percent surplus. A week ago it was 37 percent surplus and 63 percent adequate. Since June 1st, Eau Claire and Madison rainfall totals are nearly five-inches above normal.
