Improving water quality in Lake Erie

To help farmers in the Western Basin of Lake Erie and those in the Blanchard River watershed with conservation assistance to improve Lake Erie’s water quality, the Natural Resources Conservation Service has funds available through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI).

“The goal of this initiative is to restore, protect and preserve that eco-system,” said Barbara Baker, Assistant State Conservationist for Natural Resources in the Ohio NRCS office.

With sign-up for GLRI funding currently underway, Baker tells Brownfield the process is similar to other NRCS programs.

“They need to go into their local field office and fill out an application,” Baker said. “Some of them may have pending applications for older sign-up periods and those are still valid for this sign-up as well, but they may want to let their District Conservationist know that they are still interested in participating the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) through the GLRI.”

The sign-up deadline is July 18, 2014.
