When making hay becomes challenging

Weather conditions in many areas have caused hay-making to be a challenge this year.

Rory Lewandowski, Extension educator in Wayne County Ohio says hay could mold if put up wet.

“And if it stays wet like this one of the things we would talk about is maybe consider, if at all possible doing some wrapping of hay, looking at baleage in order for us to put hay up at a little higher moisture content and still produce a good quality hay product for our animals,” the Ohio State Extension educator said.

For livestock producers concerned about quality, Lewandowski suggests having the hay tested.

“Livestock managers need to be thinking about where do we use our poor quality hay, what kind of livestock class and are we gonna have to supplement,” said Lewandowski. “We’re gonna want to get a hay test on some of that first cutting hay and make sure we know what the quality is.”
