Saputo says no milk from B.C. dairy

Saputo, the largest milk processor in Canada says it will not accept any milk from the Chilliwack Cattle Sales dairy herd. The 3,500-cow dairy farm in British Columbia is where a number of employees were caught on undercover video mistreating animals.

Saputo notified the B.C. Milk Marketing Board it will not accept any milk supplied by this farm until they are “fully satisfied that strict animal welfare practices are in place.” The Kooyman family which owns the farm says they are installing security cameras which will be monitored and will work with the SPCA on better training for employees.

Saputo says it has reached-out to the B.C. Provincial Agriculture Minister as well as a number of B.C. dairy groups asking them to join the company in an effort “to ensure immediate consequences for those involved.” The company also declared its support for enactment of the Canadian Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Dairy Cattle published in 2009 but never implemented.
