Governor Pence signs HB1046

A bill that exempts barns built prior to 1950 from property taxes has been signed by Governor Pence.

Authored by State Representative Bob Cherry of Greenfield, Cherry describes House Bill 1046 as tool to save barns.

“Now a lot of the barns are falling down or people are not reinvesting in them,” said the District 53 Representative. “This will allow them, if they do put a new roof on they won’t have to pay more taxes and we can start saving some of these older structures and help preserve the rural landscape of Indiana.”

Cherry says in addition to House Bill 1046, a group of interested individuals are forming a barn foundation to raise money that will provide grants to restore old barns.
