Double cropping soybeans

Wheat harvest in Ohio could be a week to 10 days later than normal, which may cause some to rethink planting double crop soybeans.

For those in Central and southern Ohio thinking about double crop soybeans Bill Mullen, director of agronomic services at Seed Consultants suggests harvesting wheat at a little higher moisture.

“Because we need to get those beans in the ground, a one day delay planting soybeans for double crop really can affect the yield later on,” Mullen said. “We need to get this wheat off at 17-20 percent moisture and the other thing too, that’s when we always see good grain quality, when we take it off with some moisture and then we dry it down.”

Mullen says this is also the year that those farmers who did a good job of managing their wheat crop will see a huge payoff in terms of yield.
