Ethanol producer moves into cattle feeding

A major U.S. ethanol producer is moving into the cattle feeding business.

Omaha-based Green Plains Inc. has acquired the assets of Kansas-based Supreme Cattle Feeders from Agri Beef Co.  The purchase includes a 70-thousand head capacity feed yard and the Cimarron Grain storage facility based near Kismet, Kansas.

Green Plains president and CEO Todd Becker says the purchase of the custom cattle-feeding business and storage facility give his company the ability to further process its distillers grains and corn oil and extend its corn origination network.  And Becker tells Bloomberg News that Green Plains will likely transition into feeding its own cattle in the future.

Green Plains is the fourth largest ethanol producer in the U.S.
