Cropland values down in western Ohio

Ohio cropland values and cash rental rates are projected to be down in 2014.

The latest survey in western Ohio expects bare cropland to be down 4 to 5.4 percent.

Barry Ward in the Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Development Economics at Ohio State University tells Brownfield the decline wasn’t a surprise.

“With crop prices being lower in 2014 and profits as well, I mean that profit picture is much more conservative than what it has been,” said Ward. “We did expect to see numbers kind of flattening out, possibly a slight decrease, so it followed what our expectations were.”

Cash rents in Western Ohio are projected to be down from .1 to 3.1 percent in 2014.
