Disaster programs sign-up to begin

Beginning Tuesday, farmers can sign-up for disaster assistance programs.  Indiana Farm Service Agency director Julia Wickard says the programs were reestablished and strengthened by the 2014 Farm Bill.

The Livestock Indemnity Program and the Livestock Forage Disaster Program will provide payments toe eligible producers for livestock deaths and grazing losses that have occurred since the expiration of the livestock disaster assistance programs in 2011.  Enrollment also begins for the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program and the Tree Assistance Program.

Wickard says Indiana farmers have been waiting for new policy since the 2008 Farm Bill expired.  She adds, “The launch of these disaster programs signals the start of new policy to assist American agriculture.”

To expedite the process, producers who experienced losses are encouraged to bring their records, documenting losses to their local FSA county office.

Tomorrow, Wickard will be at the Johnson/Marion County FSA office to take part in real-time producer sign-up and to talk about programs available to Indiana farmers.
