Sen. Portman talks importance of trade
During a meeting with Ohio Farm Bureau County President’s in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, March 5, Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) said there needs to be a focus on trade when talking about ag issues.
“You know we produce the best products in the world, we just need to offer more opportunities for more of the consumers outside the United States to buy our products,” said Portman. “95 percent of the consumers live outside of America, we’ve got this great farmland, we’ve got the most productive farmers in the world let’s take advantage of it.”
And looking at Ohio and the impact trade has on the economy, the former U.S. Trade Representative said the state ranks 11th in the U.S. in terms of exports.
“I want us to be even higher,” the Senator said. “We’re number 6 or 7 for corn and soybeans, depending on the year, so we are a huge ag state and exports are a big part of what we ought to be doing.”
