Indiana’s Right to Farm Bill advances

Indiana lawmakers are one step closer to passing a Right to Farm Bill.  Senate Bill 186, sponsored by state Senator Carlin Yoder, would protect Indiana farmers from animal rights activist and others who he says are going after the agriculture industry through legal action.

The House Agriculture & Rural Development Committee voted 12-1 last week to pass the bill on to the full Indiana House for consideration.

Director for state government relations for Indiana Farm Bureau, Katrina Hall says the bill is a reaffirmation of the importance of agriculture to the state.  She says, “We’re glad that the committee members consider the bill on its merits, understand its context and weren’t taken in by the baseless arguments put forth by the bill’s opponents.”

Opponents of the legislation say the language would unfairly favor farmers in lawsuits.

The bill could head to the full House as early as this week.
