FDA warns of illness from rice product

The Food & Drug Administration is warning food service companies, schools and consumers not to use any Uncle Ben’s Infused Rice products sold in large quantities of five and 25-pounds because of the risk of illness. All the products are being recalled. A cluster of illnesses associated with the product has occurred at three public schools in Katy, Texas. Other reports of students becoming ill come from the Illinois Department of Public Health and from several day care facilities in North Dakota last October. The sickness includes burning, itching rashes, headaches and nausea.

The products, which are infused with various flavors such as “roasted chicken,” are not typically available to retail consumers but the FDA says they may be available over the internet and at Warehouse-type retailers.
