Wheat growers favor fast track passage

The U.S. wheat industry would like the President to have so-called “fast track” trade promotion authority. The National Association of Wheat Growers issued a news release applauding legislation to grant the President that authority.

Wheat growers President Bing von Bergen, a Montana wheat farmer, says putting trade promotion authority in place will benefit U.S. wheat farmers.

The legislation sets conditions for the President to negotiate free trade agreements and allows for Congressional consideration of the agreements without amendment. Von Bergen points out that “fast track,” builds confidence with U.S. negotiating partners, because once an agreement is reached, Congress cannot change it.

The National Association of Wheat Growers and U.S. Wheat Associates adopted a resolution supporting fast track passage. US Wheat Chairman Dan Hughes of Nebraska says that without trade promotion authority, U.S. farmers risk falling behind in international markets.
