2013 corn crop a record high, soybeans third largest

USDA reports 2013 U.S. corn production was a new all-time high and last year’s soybean crop was the third largest on record.

The 2013 corn crop totaled 13.925 billion bushels, up sharply from 2012, but less than what analysts had been expected. The average yield was 158.8 bushels per acre and harvested area was 87.668 million acres. Planted acreage was 95.365 million acres. Record yields were reported in Indiana, along with a number of other states, and USDA’s objective yield data shows record ear counts in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Before the report, production was seen at 14.053 billion bushels, with an average yield of 161.1 bushels per acre and harvested area of 87.195 million acres. In 2012, corn totaled 10.780 billion bushels, with an average yield of 123.4 bushels per acre and harvested area of 87.4 million acres.

Soybeans totaled 3.289 billion bushels, a jump of more than 250 million on the year and at the high end of what the trade was expecting. The average yield came out at 43.3 bushels per acre and harvested area was 75.869 million acres. Planted area was 76.533 million acres. Ohio and several other states posted record yields, while pods counts were up more than 200 pods per 18 square feet in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Analysts were projected soybeans at 3.27 billion bushels, with an average yield of 43.19 bushels per acre and harvested area of 75.715 million acres. In 2012, soybeans totaled 3.034 billion bushels, with an average yield of 39.8 bushels per acre and harvested area of 76.164 million acres.

Illinois: Corn: 2.1 billion bushels, compared to 1.286 billion in 2013; average yield of 178 bushels per acre, compared to 105 a year ago; harvested area of 11.8 million acres, compared to 12.25 million last year; Soybeans: 461.58 million bushels, compared to 383.99 million in 2012; average yield of 49 bushels per acre, compared to 43 a year ago; harvested area of 9.42 million acres, compared to 8.93 million last year

Indiana: Corn: 1.035 billion bushels, compared to 596.970 million in 2012; average yield of 177 bushels per acre, compared to 99 a year ago; harvested area of 5.85 million acres, compared to 6.03 million last year; Soybeans: 264.69 million bushels, compared to 226.16 million in 2012; average yield of 51 bushels per acre, compared to 44 a year ago; harvested area of 5.19 million acres, compared to 5.14 million last year

Iowa: Corn: 2.162 billion bushels, compared to 1.877 billion in 2012; average yield of 165 bushels per acre, compared to 137 a year ago; harvested area of 13.1 million acres, compared to 13.7 million last year; Soybeans: 411.18 million bushels, compared to 414.295 million in 2012; average yield of 44.5 bushels per acre, unchanged from a year ago; harvested area of 9.24 million acres, compared to 9.31 million last year

Missouri: Corn: 435.2 million bushels, compared to 247.5 million in 2012; average yield of 136 bushels per acre, compared to 75 a year ago; harvested area of 3.2 million acres, compared to 3.3 million last year; Soybeans: 197.025 million bushels, compared to 158.1 million in 2012; average yield of 35.5 bushels per acre, compared to 30 a year ago; harvested area of 5.55 million acres, compared to 5.27 million last year

Wisconsin: Corn: 445.3 million bushels, compared to 399.3 million in 2012; average yield of 146 bushels per acre, compared to 121 a year ago; harvested area of 3.05 million acres, compared to 3.3 million last year; Soybeans: 58.9 million bushels, compared to 70.55 million in 2012; average yield of 38 bushels per acre, compared to 41.5 a year ago; harvested area of 1.55 million acres, compared to 1.7 million last year
