Farm Bill negotiations continue

Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, January 8, Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, a member of the Farm Bill Conference Committee said he’s confident a Farm Bill will get done, but when that might happen is still a question.

“The commodity and nutrition titles are the major holdups,” said Brown. “I’ve heard from the Ohio Corn and Soybean farmers, they can’t support a bill that includes House language on commodities, I’ve heard a lot of hunger groups and they can’t support a bill that has the House language on the SNAP program, so both the commodity and nutrition titles there is still disagreement, I think we’re close to an agreement on it.”

While the Senator is doubtful the Conference Committee will meet this week, that’s not to say work isn’t being done. He says both Chairwoman Stabenow and Chairman Frank Lucas and their staffs are meeting on a regular basis.

“My job is to represent Ohio consumers and Ohio farmers and the Senate bill is much, much better for them, they tell me that and I see that from the 25 roundtables or 30 or however many roundtables we’ve done,” the Senator said. “I want a compromise, we’ve already compromised a number of things on this, crop insurance, on nutrition and some of the other programs, but we’ve got to get this bill as similar to the Senate bill as we can.”
