Cow/calf producer ‘in the driver’s seat’

During their annual convention, Missouri cattlemen discussed record fed cattle prices, but also profitability. Bates County cattleman Lonny Duckworth says despite high fed cattle prices, as a cow/calf producer, he’s at a distinct advantage.

“Right now, we’re in the driver’s seat,” Duckworth told Brownfield Ag News, during a break in the meeting on Friday. “Buyers are willing to pay a very high price to fill their [feed]lots, and they can’t even really cover that on the [Chicago Mercantile Exchange] board right now; and it sure is a dicey game out there when you’re buying those feeders and putting them in the lot and putting these high input costs into them.”

Duckworth adds that the producer selling fed cattle has a perishable product with a brief window of opportunity to take advantage of the high market.
