USDA makes meal changes permanent

The USDA has made permanent the adjustments it made in late 2012 after rolling out new healthier meal standards earlier that year.

Kevin Concannon, the Undersecretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services says based on public feedback, the USDA will allow schools to continue to offer larger portions of whole grains and lean proteins.

The American Farm Bureau Federation was one of the groups critical of the USDA’s new meal standards and portion sizes as inadequate to meet the needs of active children. Many parents and students had complained that the students were still hungry because the meals were not filling enough.
