U.S. sugar policy is the right way to do it

HayesAmerica’s sugar policy is seemingly under constant scrutiny as those who use it say we are too protectionist while those who grow it say they need to survive. Phillip Hayes with the American Sugar Alliance says ironically, both the House and Senate versions of the farm bill have the same sugar policy. “The road to get here was rocky; we faced no less than five recorded votes during this debate, more than anyone else in agriculture, with each turning out the same.” In the end, Hayes says lawmakers realized they could not dismantle our sugar policy as foreign competitors increase their subsidies. Hayes also points to the fact sugar prices are at lows not seen since the 1980’s because of oversupply most notably from Mexico.
