Like their South Dakota counterparts, cattle ranchers in the Pine Ridge area of northwest Nebraska continue to count their losses and search for survivors following last weekend’s devastating snow storm.
We discussed the situation with the Melody Benjamin, vice president of member services for Nebraska Cattlemen. She’s been talking to ranchers and trying to get a handle on total losses from the storm. Benjamin says individual losses are ranging from a few cattle to as much 80 percent of the herd. And she tells Brownfield that disposal of the carcasses may also be a challenge.
