Ohio corn and bean harvest begins

The latest weekly crop and weather report issued by the Ohio field office of the National Ag Statistics Service (NASS) for the week ending Sunday, September 22, has corn and soybean harvest underway, but just barely.

As of Sunday, corn harvest was three percent complete, four points behind the 5-year average. 92 percent of the crop has reached the dent stage and 32 percent of the Ohio corn crop is mature, 12 points behind the average.

68 percent of the corn crop is in fair-to good condition, compared to 64 percent a week ago.

Soybean harvest is three percent complete, three points behind the average pace. 70 percent of the crop is dropping leaves, nine points ahead of the average.

76 percent of soybeans are in fair-to-good condition, the same as last week.

Two percent of winter wheat has been seeded.

Rain last week improved topsoil moisture, the weekly crop and weather report has topsoil moisture in the state 71 percent adequate to surplus, compared to 62 percent a week ago.
