USDA raises corn production estimate

USDA has raised its corn production estimate, while lowering the outlook for soybeans.

As of September 1, U.S. corn production is seen at a record 13.843 billion bushels with an average yield of 155.3 bushels per acre, compared to August’s guess of 13.763 billion bushels with an average yield of 154.4 bushels per acre. USDA states objective yield numbers indicate the highest number of ears on record for Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. Before the report, the average estimate was 13.646 billion bushels with an average yield of 153.9 bushels per acre. Harvested area is seen at 89.135 million acres. In 2012, corn totaled 10.780 billion bushels with an average yield of 123.4 bushels per acre and harvested area of 87.375 million acres.

Soybeans are pegged at 3.149 billion bushels with an average yield of 41.2 bushels per acre, compared to 3.255 billion bushels with an average yield of 42.6 bushels per acre last month. USDA adds objective yield data in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota points to solid year to year increases in pod count, with the biggest jump in South Dakota and strong rises in Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, and Missouri. Additionally, if realized, average yields in Ohio and Pennsylvania would be new record highs. USDA matched the pre-report guess for production and the average estimate for yield was 41.3 bushels per acre. Harvested area is estimated at 76.378 million acres. In 2012, U.S. soybean production was 3.015 billion bushels with an average yield of 39.6 bushels per acre and harvested area of 76.104 million bushels.

USDA does note that late planting has led to slow development for both crops and, in any event, there’s still a ways to go in the growing season.
