Warm, dry weather helped Iowa’s crops

A week of warm and dry weather was just what the doctor ordered for Iowa’s corn and soybean crops.

“The warm dry weather last week was very welcome and crops responded and look much better,” says Iowa agriculture secretary Bill Northey.

As of Sunday, the state’s corn crop was rated 58 percent good to excellent and 30 percent fair. There were reports of corn starting to tassel in scattered fields across the state.

Soybeans were rated 56 percent good to excellent and 33 percent fair.

Farmers were close to wrapping up the first cutting of alfalfa and beginning to harvest the second cutting.  Hay condition was rated 69 percent good to excellent and 26 percent fair.
