Illinois Corn Growers Association announces opposition of Congress splitting the Farm Bill

The Illinois Corn Growers Association is opposed to the current discussion in Congress to split the farm bill.  According to Rodney Weinzierl, the Executive Director of the Illinois Corn Growers Association, House conservatives supporting the split are also looking to drastically reform the food stamp program.

“The problem with that is under food and nutrition, that program is permanent.  So, if the House of Representatives passed large cuts to the food and nutrition programs, the Senate, most assuredly, would not pass it,” explained Weinzierl, “and thus, reforms would not happen.”

Weinzierl told Brownfield Ag News that Congress must realize that splitting the bill will not work.

“Without passing a five-year farm bill, reforms in both food and nutrition and farm programs does not happen,” he said.

Weinzierl said that many urban Congressmen just don’t understand the link between farm policy and the people they are representing.  He said the Corn Growers Association does not favor splitting the farm bill, nor do they support another extension of the current bill.  They are looking for action in Congress to pass a new five-year farm bill.
