House is ready to start Farm Bill debate

Earlier this week the 2013 Farm Bill passed out of the Senate with strong bipartisan support.

Illinois 17th District Congresswoman and House Ag Committee member Cheri Bustos says while Senate passage of the Farm Bill is encouraging there are some difference between it and the version that passed out of the House Ag Committee.  “The Farm Bill will be brought to the House floor next week,” she says.  “We will debate that, which I’m sure will be a very vigorous debate, and my hope is that we’ll pass a strong Farm Bill out of the House.  Then, we’ll work through the differences in conference committee.”

House Speaker John Boehner voiced his support for the Farm Bill Wednesday.

Bustos tells Brownfield that’s a good sign.  “I think it’s encouraging,” she says.  “Because if you look at the history of the Farm Bill and Congress Democrats and Republicans have been able to work together and have been able to pass a five-year Farm Bill until this last session of Congress.”

As of today – the House is scheduled to begin debate on the Farm Bill next week.
