New York wants more cows

The dramatic growth in Greek yogurt demand has prompted the State of New York to encourage dairy farmers to add more cows. Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced the threshold for an operation to be classified as a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) will be raised from 199 cow to 299 cows effective May 8th. As part of the plan, the State Agriculture and State Environmental Conservation Departments will provide $16 million to farmers to increase environmental protections with the larger herds.

New York yogurt production has nearly tripled in the last five years to 692 million pounds in 2012 making the Empire State the largest yogurt-producer in the country. New York is third in milk production behind California and Wisconsin.
