Flooding may threaten Midwest planting

After a winter when low water levels threatened to halt barge traffic, some stretches of the Mississippi River could see extensive flooding during the next week.

DTN ag meteorologist Bryce Anderson reports that the river from the Quad Cities south to St. Louis could see its most extensive flooding since 2008.

Anderson says the Mississippi River valley is not the only area affected by flood potential.  As of Wednesday afternoon, flash flood and flood bulletins issued by the National Weather Service were in effect from northern Wisconsin through eastern Iowa to south-central Illinois.

And with more rain in the forecast, Anderson says, flooding is not out of the question going into May.
