Analysts expect another month of tighter cattle numbers

Ahead of Friday’s USDA cattle on feed report, analysts, on average, expect all the major categories to be below year ago levels.

Via Dow Jones Newswires, placements onto feed during March are pegged at 99.1% of a year ago on negative feedlot margins and continued drier than normal conditions in many of the major feeding areas. Analysts’ estimates range from 92.1% to 103.2%.

Marketings during March are seen at 93.5% of a year ago with one less workday in 2013 than in 2012. Expectations run from 92.4% to 95.1%.

The total number of cattle on feed in the U.S. as of April 1 is projected at 93.9% of a year ago with estimates ranging from 92.7% to 95.5%.

The numbers are out Friday, April 19 at 3 PM Eastern/2 PM Central.
