While yesterday may have been National Agriculture Day – Indiana sets aside the entire month of March to celebrate the agriculture industry. Lt. Governor and Indiana’s Secretary of Agriculture Sue Ellspermann says agriculture really is the backbone of Indiana. “This is an opportunity to understand what an important group of individuals and industry this is to us,” she says, “from the 62,000 farmers to the almost 20 percent of our workforce that is connected to agriculture.”
Ellspermann tells Brownfield times have changed and not everyone is aware of everything that is a part of agriculture today. “We need to make sure we take the time to look at agriculture and where our food comes from,” she says. “Not only are we feeding in Indiana, Hoosiers, we’re helping to feed a very hungry word out there. It is an incredible humanitarian project as well as an industry.”
At the beginning of March Governor Mike Pence signed a proclamation recognizing March as Agriculture Appreciation Month in Indiana.
