Bovine TB found in California dairy cow

A case of Bovine Tuberculosis has been confirmed in a dairy herd in Tulare, California. The California Department of Food and Agriculture says the diseased cow was found by routine testing at a slaughter plant. Officials are now testing all of the animals on the dairy farm the cow came from plus tracing any other animals which may have come in contact with the cow. CDFA does not release the name of the dairy or the slaughter plant in these cases.

Bovine TB does not threaten the safety of milk or meat, the disease is transmissible from cow-to-cow but not to humans. Pasteurization will kill TB organisms in milk.

There was a case of bovine TB in a herd in San Bernardino County in 2011, the infection was eradicated and the herd is still being monitored.
