Biodiesel industry sets new goal

The executive director of the Iowa Biodiesel Board, Randy Olson, is pleased with the new “10 by 22” goal set forth by the National Biodiesel Board.

“That strategy is the goal to replace ten percent of the nation’s on-road diesel supply with biodiesel by the year 2022,” Olson says, “and we think Iowa can be a leader in that.”

Olson says the industry is on track to meet its “5 by 15” goal of five percent biodiesel usage by 2015.

Iowa is currently number one in biodiesel output.  The state’s 12 plants are producing about 17 percent of the nation’s biodiesel—and Olson thinks there is still room for growth.

“We might not see the drastic expansion of production capacity here that might be seen along the coasts, where there’s a more heavily concentrated usage,” he says. “But because we’re abundant with feedstock here in Iowa and the Upper Midwest, we’d certainly expect to take our fair share of production.”

Biodiesel is an advanced biofuel made from agricultural byproducts and co-products, such as soybean oil.
