FSIS changing meat import facilities inspection frequency
The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is changing its inspection schedule for countries which export meat to the United States. The agency will review documentation of meat, poultry and processed egg product imports and port-of-entry (POE) reinspections at least yearly. FSIS will conduct on-site audits of exporting facilities at least once every three years based upon the country’s performance. Site inspections had been conducted every year but FSIS says their time is better-spent focusing on those countries which pose a greater risk to public health. Those countries will be inspected more frequently.
USDA says it started making the transition from annual to the three-year inspections in 2009 and now that the transition is complete the agency has published the change in the Federal Register. Comments on the change will be accepted through March 26, 2013.
