BOAH lifts piroplasmosis testing requirement

Members of the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) voted to lift the testing requirement for equine piroplasmosis at Indiana race tracks.  In 2011, when cases of EP were increasing at race tracks around the country, board members imposed a testing requirement to protect Indiana’s racing industry.  Increased testing and prevention efforts have drastically reduced the number of cases.

Since the risk of contracting the disease has decreased, BOAH opted to eliminate the testing requirement.  The change is expected to save race horse owners between $211,000 and 390,000 in testing expenses annually.

The change goes into effect February 1, 2013; just in time for this year’s racing season.
