Thursday midday cash livestock markets

DTN is reporting a few cattle sales in Nebraska at 122.00 live and bids of 193.00 dressed. There was light to moderate trading in the South and Western Nebraska yesterday. Live deals there ranged from 121.50 to 122.50, mostly 122.00, and 1.00 to 3.00 lower than last week. While more trade is expected to develop in the North, southern trade could possibly be done except for some cleanup action. Asking prices are around 124.00 plus live and 200.00 plus in the North.

Boxed beef cutout values are lower on Thursday, choice is down 1.63 at 188.15, and select is .60 lower at 182.30.

Feeder cattle receipts at the Hub City Livestock Auction at Aberdeen, South Dakota totaled 3113 head. Of the weight groups having adequate numbers for a comparison to last week’s sale, steer and heifers weighing 500 to 900 lbs. sold mostly unevenly steady, with several examples of 2.00 over and 2.00 less occurring in each weight class, Feeder steers, medium and large 1 weighing 719 lbs. averaged 150.17 per hundredweight. 630 lb. heifers brought 145.81.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota, Western and Eastern direct trade areas are not reported due to confidentiality. National barrows and gilts are 2.68 lower on a carcass basis with a weighted average of 81.96. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady to 2.00 higher from 78.00 to 79.00.Termoinal hogs are 1.00 higher to 2.00 lower from 56.00 to 58.00 live.

For the week ending Jan. 19, Iowa barrows and gilts averaged 274.9 pounds, 1.6 pounds lighter than the previous week and 0.4 pounds smaller than 2012. Winter weather and the seasonal trend are factors working to curb total tonnage.
