Conservation Day at the Statehouse

Conservationist from around the state had the opportunity to reach out to their legislators on Wednesday.  Kosciusko County farmer and Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts secretary Jamie Scott says soil health and water quality were two of the major issues addressed during the 9th annual Conservation Day at the Statehouse.

“Some of the discussion has focused on cover crops and no-till – and how a deeper profile of the soil is being farmed than conventional tilled guys,” he says.  “We can hold more nutrients in the soil rather than them getting away and protect the organic matter – and continue to protect our lakes and rivers.”

Scott tells Brownfield – the event was more than just farmers.  “There are lake association people here, there are Nature Conservancy people here,” he says.  “One of the neat things about what we do at IASWCD – we don’t just work just with farmers – we work with everyone.”
