Wednesday midday cash livestock prices

Private sources are reporting a few bids on cattle in Texas and Kansas at 122.00. But for the most part cattle country is quiet on Wednesday.  We could start to see a few more signs of buying interest, but probably not anything to get feedlot operators too excited and significant trade volume will probably be delayed until Thursday or Friday. Asking prices are around 127.00 plus in the South and 200.00 plus in the North.

Boxed beef cutout values are lower in the morning report, with the choice down .68 at 189.91; select is .73 lower at 183.17.

Feeder cattle receipts at the Ozark’s Regional Stockyards at West Plains, Missouri totaled 2745 head on Tuesday. Compared to last week, steer and heifer calves weighing 450 to 600 lbs. long weaned with shots were steady to 1.00 higher. Others that were not weaned or fleshy singles or smaller packages sold 2.00 to 5.00 lower. Steers over 600 lbs. were 2.00 to 7.00 lower, although 7 weight yearlings were fully steady. The supply was moderate. Feeder steers, medium and large 1 averaging 674 lbs. brought 150.90 per hundredweight. 566 lb. heifers averaged 138.02.

Barrows and gilts prices in the Iowa/Minnesota and Western direct trade areas are not reported due to confidentiality. Nationally the market is 2.63 lower at 81.26 weighted averages on a carcass basis; Eastern hogs are .25 higher at 81.25. Missouri direct base carcass meat price is steady from 77.00 to 78.00. Barrows and gilts at the terminals are fully steady from 55.00 to 58.00 live.

Barrow and gilt dressed weights appear to be trending heavier in recent weeks due to mild winter weather patterns. Weights at the beginning of January were reported 1 pound heavier than the previous week and on average 3 pounds heavier since mid-December.
