Obama talks climate change

Barack Obama was inaugurated for his second term as President of the United States on Monday; his 19-minute speech outlined the agenda for his second term including a significant amount of time dedicated to climate change. “We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that failure to do so would betray our children and future generations,” Mr. Obama said. Citing drought, raging fires and more powerful storms the President stressed the need to make changes now.

Mr. Obama was unable to get comprehensive climate change legislation through Congress during his first term so his strategy this time will be to do what he can administratively. It is expected the EPA will clamp-down on emissions from coal-burning power plants, step-up energy efficiency standards for home appliances and buildings and move the military more towards the use of renewable fuels. More details are expected in the State of the Union Address and the White House Budget proposal in the coming months.
