Suspected Bovine TB case in Washington State
A cow in Washington State is being investigated for Bovine Tuberculosis. The cow was culled from a dairy herd and transported for slaughter on January 8th. A USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service inspector noticed a suspicious lesion and sent a sample to the National Vet Lab in Ames, Iowa. The lab reported the sample was consistent with Bovine TB on January 16th.
The Washington State Department of Agriculture says the meat from the cow was destroyed and there is no threat to human health. The department has halted all cattle movement from the dairy farm where the cow originated and ordered all milk from the farm be pasteurized. Pasteurization kills the bacteria. The investigation continues.
Washington State has been Bovine TB-free since 1988.
