NFU says crop insurance not a complete fix

National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson says crop insurance subsidies should be targeted to family-sized farmers.  And unlike the nation’s largest farmer organization, the American Farm Bureau Federation, the NFU supports limits on crop insurance premium subsidies that farmers can get. AFBF policy, just outlined at their convention this week, continues to call for NO limits on those subsidies.

While Johnson says it does a good job of helping farmers and ranchers manage their risks of bad yields and low incomes, crop insurance, especially revenue protections, “should not be considered a replacement for fair market prices.”

Johnson says NFU continues to advocate for “reasonable limits”, with a cap of 75-thousand dollars’ worth of crop insurance premium subsidies that a farmer can receive in a year’s time.
