Wisconsin inspectors to work Port of Duluth

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) will now handle USDA-certified grain inspections at the Port of Duluth. The Federal Grain Inspection Service licenses all DATCP grain inspectors and establishes protocols for the inspection of grain at Superior they will now do the same on the Minnesota side of the water. Wisconsin Ag Secretary Ben Brancel calls it “an innovative strategy that makes the best use of all existing resources and benefits our agencies and the grain industry,”

There are seven grain elevators with a capacity of 55 million bushels at the two ports. Federal law requires that grain destined for export must receive official grading and weighing, thus ensuring consistent quality and world market demand for American grain.

About ten percent of what goes through the twin-ports is grain. 80 percent is iron ore and coal.
