Some animal ID forms will no longer be allowed

The U.S. Department of Agriculture published its final Animal Disease Traceability (ADT) rule in the Federal Register making it effective March 11. Wisconsin Assistant State Veterinarian Dr. Paul McGraw says the new rule means some forms of animal ID that were previously considered acceptable for cattle are no longer valid after the rule takes effect.

As of March 11, breed registration tattoos and registration numbers will no longer be considered official for cattle. American ID, 982 series tags, will no longer be valid in two years. Breed registration tattoos and registration numbers will still be official ID for sheep, goats and other species, but not for cattle.

Acceptable ID forms include National Uniform Eartag System tags such as the orange brucellosis vaccination tags. Brands are acceptable only if the state of origin and the state of destination approve and have an agreement although Wisconsin has no agreements of this type in place. Other official ID approved by USDA will be accepted.
