Thursday midday cash livestock markets

Cattle country is slow to start on Thursday with just few bids being reported so far in the North at 204.00 to 205.00. Asking prices are around 129.00 to 130.00 plus in the South and 207.00 plus in the North. We may see some trade develop today, but it is possible significant business will be delayed until Friday.

Choice boxed beef at midday is up .15 at 193.70, and select is .61 higher at 184.14.

Feeder cattle receipts at the Huss Platte Valley Auction in Nebraska totaled 5800 head on Wednesday. Compared to last week, steers were 1.00 to 7.00 higher and heifers were 2.00 to 5.00 higher. Demand was good on all weights of cattle. Feeder steers, medium and large 1 weighing an average of 676 lbs. brought 162.81 per hundredweight. 626 lb. heifers averaged 147.07.

Barrows and gilts in the Iowa/Minnesota direct trade opened .62 lower, the West is down .54 with both at 82.90 on a carcass basis, and the Eastern trade is 3.28 lower at 79.26. Missouri direct base carcass meat price trended steady to 1.00 lower from 74.00 to 76.00. Terminal markets are steady with an instance of 2.00 higher from 53.50 to 56.00. Illinois direct trade barrows and gilts are mostly steady from 53.00 to 57.00 live.

 Iowa barrows and gilts averaged 276.3 pounds last week, 0.5 pounds heavier than the previous week and 1.7 pounds lighter than 2012.
