State expands Century Farm Program

Beginning this summer, Ohio’s Century Farm Program will be expanded, to include bicentennial farms.

“We’re actually expanding or enhancing the Century Farm Program,” said Cindy Shy is the Century Farm Program manager at the Ohio Department of Agriculture. “Families will continue to register as a Century Farm, but they will receive the Bicentennial Farm designation when they reach their 200 year anniversary of farm ownership.”

Shy tells Brownfield the Bicentennial Farms will be recognized this summer during their county fair.

“Right now there are about 66 farms in 32 counties that qualify for the Bicentennial Farm designation,” Shy said.

With the addition of 78 Century Farms in 2012, there are currently over 950 Century Farms in the state and with first ever registrations in Athens, Noble and Pike Counties, at least one Ohio Century Farm is now registered in all 88 Ohio counties.
