Economic boost from Corn and Ethanol in MO

A study by the University of Missouri, released by the Missouri Corn Growers Association, shows the impact on the state’s economy from corn and ethanol over the past 12 years (from 2000 through 2011).

Corn Growers’ Executive Director Gary Marshall says corn and ethanol combined have had a $12 Billion overall economic impact, over 5-Billion dollars in labor income and brought in more than 2.2 Billion dollars in local, state and federal taxes.

“This has been an extremely wonderful success story for the state of Missouri,” Marshall tells Brownfield Ag News, “We’ve been telling folks for a long time that corn and ethanol and soybean production in this state have been drivers for the state’s rural economy. And, I think, certainly that this study on corn and ethanol proves that.”

Missouri ranked 10th among states in corn production in 2011. Ethanol production exceeded 250-million gallons that year. Missouri has six ethanol plants.
