Kind says dairy in dire straights if no farm bill

The effects of no farm bill, should Congress fail to pass one this year, would be acutely felt in the dairy industry.  Wisconsin Congressman Ron Kind says the lack of a five-year farm bill would be detrimental to dairy and milk prices, “Because the federal buy-up program will mean going back to a $40 per hundredweight buy-up program which could lead to $8 and $9 a gallon milk on the grocery shelf.”

Kind says Congress is playing with fire and there’s no excuse for not passing a farm bill this year.  The Representative says, “I’ve never seen greater dereliction of duty and responsibility coming out of Washington than right now.”

If something isn’t done, farm legislation would revert back to 1949 law come January 1st (2012) which Kind says will have devastating consequences for agriculture because, he adds, “agriculture today is a lot different than it was in the mid-20th century.”
