Vilsack and Kirk urge Russia to restore market

U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk are calling on Russia to restore market access for U.S. beef and pork products.

Following Russia’s decision to cut off imports this past Saturday, a day after the Senate passed Permanent Normal Trade Relations for Russia, the country announced a new requirement for the U.S. to test for the feed additive ractopamine. The U.S. does not have such a testing process in place.

In a joint statement issued Saturday, Vilsack and Kirk said Russia’s actions were “inconsistent with its obligations as a member of the World Trade Organization” and that Russia should demonstrate that it “takes its WTO commitments seriously” in adhering “to international standards unless it had a risk assessment to justify use of a more stringent standard.”
